son-of-rome asked: I think the issue is that Rick wrote himself into a corner with PJO. He felt he needed to up the ante with new, more powerful demigods and already had Percy on this pedestal of power and the fastest way to build the new characters up was to tear the old ones down. So he undercut a lot of the original characters in favor of shortening the amount of work he'd have to do for the new ones
That’s exactly it!! And it’s a damn shame because he’d put so much effort into his characterisation in PJO, and everyone introduced in HoO deserved just as much development. Both groups ended up suffering from lazy writing.
It’s annoying that he tried to run so many characters at one time. I know so many people love Nico and Reyna and I’m glad that Rick gave us such deep, interesting characters, but he dropped two of the “main” characters to do it. He stopped development of two well known, adored characters to do it. He completely left out characters from the old series to do it.
Eight characters was too much for Rick. It simply was. All of HoO needed to be written from one characters perspective, maybe two or three, but eight was far, far too many. I love the characters Rick has given us, but I hate that we as a fandom have had to build them into what they were supposed to be.
