As I was walking by the bookstore today I noticed this poster saying “Trials of Apollo” was the best seller for Children’s fiction. You have no idea how happy this makes me. A book that shows LGBT+ representation is a favorite by children whose minds don’t even know what it means. This book contains parental acceptance to children on their sexuality (Apollo on Will) and an actual badass gay relationship (Solangelo), and children are not only reading it but they love it so much that it has become the top bestseller.
When I asked a 7-year-old who read the book if he cared whether or not Apollo was bi, he said it “didn’t make him any less badass.” When I asked if he cared about the relationship of Nico and Will, he said it was just as adorable as the rest of the relationships in the previous books. Bottomline, he didn’t think that the sexualities of Apollo, Nico, and Will affected their ability to be, as society calls it, manly.
I’m so so grateful to Rick Riordan for writing this book that lets children realize at a young age that sexualities are accepted and that a person can be more than just their sexuality. They let children realize that a good parent is not someone who decides their children’s sexuality, but rather accepts it no matter what.

*softly* don’t……..
okay i’ve said this once but i’m going to repeat myself because if i see one more person complain something along the lines of “i wish we had pjo calypso back” i’m going to lose it
listen, i understand that in tbotl we all read about the trapped on an island, hopeless romantic, extremely wise and kind, nature loving, percy’s love interest calypso but there she was a single facet of herself, she was mostly rick’s character
everyone has to remember that calypso is in fact a figure that already existed in greek mythology, and just like the gods and goddesses, already has a personality and character depth that rick now has to work with because she is no longer someone who appeared for a few short chapters
calypso in fact, is a nymph who held odysseus captive on her island for years and when she was confronted by the gods to let him go, she called them out on all their bullshit. she isn’t afraid of anything or anyone.
i know most of us don’t approve of the relationship rick has set her up in, i mean honestly neither do i, but ignore that because we’re talking about calypso, the calypso who was angry another guy got washed up her beach: she’s allowed to be angry. calypso who fell in love with him because that is her curse: the fates made it this way and she’s allowed to fall in love again.
calypso, the demi-titaness who is somehow now mortal and has lost her powers (i could write a whole essay on why this isn’t necessary but don’t start me right now) and now has to deal with being mundane for the first time in her life and is probably extremely upset about. this is still the same calypso, we just get to see more of her now. she’s going to have her own arc, she’s going to keep developing, she isn’t just a romantic interest, she isn’t those few chapters. she never has been and she never will be.
this is calypso, she is romantic and angry and wise and kind and intelligent and dangerous and is probably going to end up saving apollo’s mortal ass more than once in this next series, so i don’t want to hear “i miss pjo calypso.”
she never left.
apollo: *arrives on percy’s doorstep*
percy: i would very much like to be excluded in this narrative, one that i have never asked to be a part of, since 2009
Look I didn’t want to be a half-blood.
We have only a few hours, so listen carefully.
Even before he got electrocuted, Jason was having a rotten day.
Yeah, I know. You guys are going to read about how I died in agony, and you’re going to be like, “Wow! That sounds cool, Magnus! Can I die in agony too?”
My name is Apollo.
~the opening lines from Rick Riordan that brought me into a world of mythology, learning, and an adventure to last a lifetime
13 year old me reading 12 year old percy fighting the Minotaur and jumping off high shit: wow that’s so cool he’s so brave
16 year old me reading meg walk 3 steps in manhattan: ohhhhhkay how bout we ditch the mortal god and go some where nice and safe and warm?????????!!!!!??!!???
Sorry, Percy Jackson cannot go on any more quests; he has a note from his doctor because he’s sick of almost dying.
